Marriage law
Jun. 14th, 2007 02:11 pmYesterday was the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Loving vs. Virginia, which held that the anti-miscegenation statutes are unconstitutional -- that marriages between different races cannot be outlawed. At that time, it got a lot of press, and according to some polls more than 60% of all Americans were against legalizing different-race marriages, stating that it will bring the end to the marriage institution, etc. The appeals court judge in that case, in upholding the anti-miscegenation statute, wrote:
Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.
