Lessing Not Impressed by Nobel Prize

I haven't read "The Golden Notebook" or anything else by this year prize winner. Should I?
I read Elfriede Jelinek though and I can't see how she became the chosen one.

Astrid Lindgren
Tove Jansson
J.P. Tolkien
George Orwell
...
too many were left out and no way this can be repaired now

What is the true meaning of this prize, I wonder.
Is it all about politics as if Nobel Peace Prize is not enough?

The very first Nobel Prize in Literature winner was a French poet Sully Prudhomme. Nobody knows him today. I recently asked a highly educated and well-read French guy - never even heard the name.

Notice how many of the laureats are, or have been, card-carrying members of various hard-core communist parties (shooting from the hip: Andric, Sholokhov, Neruda, Seifert, Gordimer, Fo, Saramago, Gao Xingjian, Jelinek, Pinter, Lessing). Are there any other writers?

Are you still looking for a job? My company is actively looking for people. It's mostly unix/networking, but I think they just want good programmers. Doesn't sound like what you were looking for, but who knows ... It's a nice place, very flexible, can work from home occasionally, and its possible to work less than 40 hours.
