enot06Любопытная статья в Boston Globe, которая объясняет, почему в UMass Amherst стало труднее поступить при том, что рейтинг не изменился. Статья не об этом, это мои выводы.
Статья о том, что из экономических соображений и в свете сокращения финансовой помощи от штата, штатские университеты стали давать больше стипендий, основанных на заслугах, тем, кто не из Массачусетса - они платят в два раза больше, все равно получается выгодно.
Внештатные студенты UMass Amherst получили 22 млн., а местные - 9.9.
...the calculus is simple. With out-of-state students paying roughly twice the amount of locals — $31,000 in annual tuition and fees versus about $14,000 — handing out a $7,600 scholarship is still a net positive in terms of the tuition revenue the school brings in from out-of-staters.
В этом году впервые UMass Amherst принял больше внештатных студентов, чем местных. Но из тех, кто пошел учиться, большинство из местных.
This year, for the first time, UMass Amherst admitted more out-of-state students than those from in-state. But of those who ultimately enrolled, the majority were from Massachusetts.

But other UMass campuses want to increase the number of out-of-state students. UMass Boston offers $10,000 merit scholarships (plus an invitation to the campus honors college) to out-of state students with a 3.5 GPA and 1,200 SAT score. That campus saw a 220 percent increase in out-of-state students since 2008, according to the Pioneer study.

Моей дочери было не дороже учиться (Бард не дешевле Барнарда), ей дали стипендию. А вот со следуюшим будем платить по полной. И если это будет Umass Amherst, то это будет нам намного дешевле, чем частная школа.
Но насчет Европы спорить не буду, с ценой на образование ситуация гораздо более вменяемая.
